Workplace Quotas
The push for workplace quotas is gaining momentum, and recently a former advisor to John Howard also recommended this.
However, I feel this is something we must avoid.
An employer must have the flexibility, and right, to employ who he feels is the best person for the job, the person he knows best fits his workplace and its needs.
If a female was to gain a job purely because of being female, this could generate even more toxic workplaces than currently exists.
How will people react to women who only got a job because they were a female, and better suited and qualified people were overlooked? And how would the woman feel, knowing she only got the job because of her sex?
And is this in fact reverse discrimination?
I accept that not all workplaces do the right thing, and there are many cases of females, and males, being poorly treated in the workplace, but that is an issue that needs to be improved. However, mandating workplace quotas will not resolve this.
